These heaters from Comfort Zone, Honeywell, Lasko, and other brands excel at warming up rooms and the people in them.

In our tests of the best space heaters, we’ve found several models that work well—and some that even add a bit of style to your room—all for less than $100. 

More than appearance and cost, though, safety separates the good space heaters from the great space heaters. For instance, you might consider a space heater with a remote control because it’s safest to keep space heaters on the floor rather than on the table, and you don’t want to have to worry about kneeling down to twist knobs and dials on the bottom of the unit. Or you might prefer to buy a space heater with a tip-over safety switch that turns the machine off when it’s knocked over.

You might also consider noise, as a loud machine can be annoying if you’re trying to work or watch TV while warming up your room. Fortunately, many of the space heaters in CR’s ratings earned a very good or excellent score in our noise test, and those that did worse typically had other shortcomings. If you’re energy- and eco-conscious, look for a model with our Green Choice leaf, which identifies products that use fewer resources and less energy.
